UNM named to Hispanic magazine list

Staff Report

UNM is the only New Mexico school to be on Hispanic magazine's top 25 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics in its March issue.

UNM President Bill Gordon said being 24th on the list shows that UNM is committed to being a Hispanic serving institution.

"I am grateful that Hispanic magazine continues to recognize UNM as a top ranked university for Hispanics," Gordon said.

The list mentions the architecture of UNM's campus which illustrates Spanish and Pueblo Indian influences. It mentions two of the University's strongest academic programs - Latin American affairs and Southwest Hispanic studies. The list also recognizes UNM's position in the second tier of America's Best Colleges.

The 2002 list also names institutions that are succeeding in recruiting and retaining Hispanic students.

In order to be considered for the list, the colleges needed to show that their student bodies were reflective of the overall U.S. population of Hispanics. The number of Latinos graduating from colleges also was considered.

The magazine's other criteria included the number of Hispanic-related degree programs, Hispanic student organizations, recruiting, minority support programs and Hispanic faculty.

Other ranked schools, in descending order, were Stanford University, Rice University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Texas at Austin, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California at San Diego, Harvard University, University of California at Los Angeles, Amherst College, Columbia University, University of California at Davis, New York University, University of Florida, Swathmore College, University of Notre Dame, University of California at Santa Barbara, Arizona State University, Southern Methodist University, University of Southern California, University of Miami, Rutgers University, University of Arizona, Texas A&M University, UNM and Depaul University.
