LETTER: Lobo misrepresents Frisbee team

Editor,

The Daily Lobo's article concerning the UNM Ultimate Frisbee Club's Green Chili Festival was not only lacking in integrity, but also completely insulting to many of the best athletes in the Southwest.

The article feeds an already rampant misunderstanding about the game of ultimate Frisbee and its players.

If the interviewer had bothered to actually watch some of the competition instead of conducting a five-minute interview when the games were already over it would have been clear to you that ultimate Frisbee is not "exemplified by a keg of beer that flows freely on the sidelines."

You would have seen that ultimate Frisbee is a highly competitive and athletic sport that requires at least as much dedication as the other mainstream sports that dominate your publication's headlines.

The interviewer saw only two of the 12 teams present at the Green Chili Festival.

Had she covered the actual competition, she would have realized that New Mexico State University was not present, contrary to what was printed in the article.

If she had bothered to take any sort of context into consideration when quoting team members, it would have been clear that the majority of time at an ultimate Frisbee tournament is spent in fierce competition, not standing in line for the ice luge.

In truth, the party in question had nothing to do with the University of New Mexico itself, as the article may suggest. No University funds were spent to throw it and it was held at an off-campus location, so it has no business or place in the sports section of the Daily Lobo.

It would seem that information about the party was used to fill a void that was left for lack of knowledge about the event and the sport itself.

The UNM Ultimate Frisbee Club has been in existence for three years and has been fighting for recognition from the student body and the Daily Lobo since its founding.

It is shameful that such a hard fought image could be so easily tarnished by such incompetent journalism.
