LETTER: Instructor's letter reflects poorly on his department

Editor,

I really want to comment on Ricky Lee Allen's letter that was printed on March 6. The fact that the writer identified himself as a "UNM College of Education Instructor" should be an embarrassment to all of his colleagues in the College of Education. I certainly hope that his letter was not an indication of the level of scholarship held by instructors in the College of Education.

I hope also that Mr. Allen is not a graduate of UNM, since his/her grossly biased and unsupported generalizations about U.S. History would not reflect any better on the UNM History Department.

Phrases like " ... middle-class whites have long played [working-class whites] against people of color" and "the white supremacist program of middle-class whites" are so racist they ought to be an affront to all members of the UNM community, no matter their color or "class."

Only a licensed therapist could say if Allen's assertions are the result of misplaced guilt and incredible self-loathing, or just plain ignorance. Either way - thanks for the heads-up! I'll be sure never to sign up for one of his courses.
