The UNM student-athletes continue to improve in the classroom, compiling a school record 2.92 grade point average during the 2001 fall semester.
It's the highest grade point average since the athletics department began charting academic performance in the fall of 1988. Student-athletes compiled a 2.91 average during the 2000 fall semester and 2001 spring session.
This is the sixth straight semester that Lobo student-athletes have achieved a 2.89 or higher.
"It's another outstanding academic performance by our student-athletes," athletics director Rudy Davalos said in a press release. "That's a lot of hard work by our student-athletes and the coaches that recruit to the University of New Mexico. Danny Trujillo (assistant athletics director/academic services) and his staff continue to provide excellent support and direction for our student-athletes."
The highest grade point average on the women's side is the tennis team, recording a 3.67, while the volleyball team had a 2.63 to earn the lowest.
On the men's side, the ski team compiled a 3.36 grade point average.

The men's basketball team not only struggles on the court, but also in the classroom. It finished with the lowest grade point average of all the athletic teams at UNM, earning a 2.17.
While the school isn't allowed to release individual grades because of the Buckley Amendment, the Albuquerque Journal reported that Trujillo confirmed that only four men's basketball players had a better average than 3.0, with the highest being 3.3.
Trujillo told the Journal five team members were between 2.0 and 2.9, while six others were at 1.9 or lower. The lowest was a 1.06, with two others checking in at 1.53 and 1.66.
In order to be eligible to play the fall semester, athletes must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Athletes are not penalized for grades below that average during the spring or summers.
