LETTER: Shuttle drivers do a difficult job very well

Editor,

I support all the UNM bus drivers. I support Bobby, Anna and Jerry. They have a difficult job dealing with 50 to 60 students rushing the bus at once in the hopes of getting to class on time. The drivers do an excellent job picking up as many students as they can without breaking the rules.

They try to stop the crowded bus gently so the students won't fly out the windows. You try driving a 20,000-pound vehicle with 30 students standing up while avoiding pedestrians and drivers pulling out in front of you. It is a difficult job, and I think they do it well.

Obviously, Maureen Haas has not ridden other public transportation lately. City buses are much worse and the drivers aren't as pleasant.

There are many things a student can do to ease the parking lot commute. Students should arrive early to avoid the rush. The buses don't make you late you make yourselves late. No employer would accept the excuse that the bus made you late to work.

Students who don't want to stand can wait for the next bus to be assured of a seat. I am short and cannot reach the handrails, so I do not ride the bus if I cannot sit.

Students can walk from the parking lot to class. I paid a premium for a parking place closer to campus so I could walk to class. The bus drivers are friendly people doing the best they can in a difficult job. I support all the bus drivers 100 percent. If you don't like the shuttle situation on campus, use your own two feet.
