LETTER: Exhibit nauseating, has no place at UNM

Editor,

Like many students at UNM, my Monday morning was greeted with a flagrantly disgusting series of images depicting abortion outside of Mitchell Hall. As for shock value, these people have certainly done their job well.

In particular, I am shocked at the comparison that they have made with abortion and the Holocaust. The Holocaust? Is it just me or is this in bad taste? Just a little uncouth, untactful, perhaps? I don't think that six million souls died just so that the religious right can justify imposing their views around college campuses. I find that particular analogy as horrifying and disgusting as the bigger than life gore-fest that they are presenting.

As many people know, some women need abortions to avoid dying during labor, for reasons of sickness and disease, not to mention women who are raped.

To those in charge of this exhibit: shame on you for making these women feel guilty and sick from these unavoidable pictures. The lack of judgment that went into that nauseating display is astounding to me. Next time, argue with logic, not shock. Liberals have been doing it for years.

And what's with this huge swing in conservatism, anyway? The right wing seems to become more imposing as the left wing passively watches their lives being dictated and controlled. I know that there are plenty of you out there that see this unfolding as well. The 10 Commandments are being posted in public schools. Texas is killing more inmates every year.

I would put pictures of execution in front of the morning Cheerios of the clowns in charge of the Mitchell Hall exhibit, but bad taste comes to mind.

Everywhere I go I see Old Glory slapped on yet another oil chugging SUV as if it were a justification of that lifestyle. I would actively denounce this "new war," but I fear that a lynch mob of angry WWF fans might throw me in the electric chair while singing "God Bless America."

The point is, we as believers of free will need to take a stand to control our lives. Our very ideals may just be suffocated by brute force, zealousness and unbridled nationalism. If action is not taken now, we will just have to settle for nothing later. I am truly embarrassed to be an American during these exceedingly ignorant times.
