Editor,
I commend Chris Maxwell for calling the UNM men's basketball program to task. Of course, the only response you'll get is a patronizing smile because you "don't understand the ins and outs of a major college sports program."
Personally you couldn't pay me to go to the The Pit, but that's just a personal problem I have resulting from trying to take my wife to a Lobo game. She's a wheelchair user, one of that small minority of New Mexicans with a parking placard who actually needs it. Of course, there are never any open handicapped spaces at The Pit.
To add insult to injury, you have parking attendants who are quoting the American Disabilities Act rules to your wife, who has been in that chair since the act was passed in the mid-1970s.
On the other hand, if you are a real sports fan, you might want to support a team made up of players who come here from all over the world with great hardships to their families to play for the love of the game. These players also donate more time and effort to community charities in a month than the Lobos do in a year. They go out of their way to make a fun environment for the kids. They are New Mexico's only professional team, the New Mexico Scorpions.
One of the players' wives has been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer. People all over the city have donated thousands and fans all over the league have collected thousands more. It's quite refreshing contrasted against the arrogance exhibited by the UNM Athletics Department.

So if you're just whining because the Lobos are losing, then whine on and continue to fund these prima donnas. If, however, you would prefer to take positive action, then go to the next Scorpions game.
