Editor,
I am writing to you to ask the UNM community to please stop the Berthold Bashing. My head and heart aches for what happened on Sept. 11 of this year and for what Berthold said. I feel that he should have been reprimanded but not fired. He has paid for what he has said with a letter in his file and a restriction on what classes he can teach.
We all make mistakes in life and, yes, sometimes we say stupid things that we may have thought were funny or sarcastic, but that doesn't mean that we are not good at what we do.
I have never had the pleasure of taking a course with Professor Berthold, but I have heard that he is an engaging individual that just has a weird sense of humor. Why can't we remember we are human, not perfect.
So, all you Fry Berthold fans out there, please remember all the times that you have done something wrong and how you felt when someone forgave you versus someone who decided to hate you forever just for what you said.
All I ask is that we move on and leave everyone involved with some level of dignity.
