Johnson Center offers array of fitness activities

Recreational Services's programs range from outdoors to team sports

Laura Montoya, assistant director of Recreational Services, said the department has many programs this semester that will help make the UNM community's time on campus more enjoyable.

"Many students don't realize that we offer a wide range of activities that are exciting and worthwhile," she said. "Dance classes, snowshoe hikes, aquatic fitness programs and team sports are all offered."

Montoya said the water fitness program is one of the more popular activities, and students can choose from two classes. Modified deep-water aerobics is a non-impact aerobic class in the deep end of the Olympic pool. The other water exercise class, in the therapy pool, helps to increase muscle tone and strength. The water exercise class costs $40 and the deep-water class costs $30 for students.

The snowshoe hikes are another popular activity, she said. They are part of the "Getaway Adventures," which allow students to explore the outdoors in the winter. The cost is $26 for students and includes transportation, guide and snowshoe rental. The next hike is Feb. 23.

"We have classes that fit the needs of all of the students and the interests of them as well," Montoya said.

She said UNM students with injuries or physical disabilities are also encouraged to take advantage of the programs.

"We have the ability to accommodate students who may have disabilities and allow them to enjoy the program," Montoya said. "We have a lot of students who have minor injuries, joint afflictions, arthritis and post-rehab."

Montoya said faculty and staff are also welcome to checkout the Recreational Services' activities.

Aside from offering students a gym and areas to play popular sports, Recreational Services offers an outreach program called Natural High, which allows grade school students to take part in activities that may not normally be accessible.

Anyone interested in the programs can call Recreational Services at 277-0178 for more information.
