The UNM women's golf team ended its fall season in impressive fashion, winning its second tournament of the season, the Wahine Rainbow Fall Golf Classic, during the week.
The Lobos played consistent, leading the tournament from start to finish while their opponents struggled in rain and high winds in Hawaii. The Lobos shot a 20-over par 886 to dominate the competition, beating second place University of Arizona by 21 strokes.
The Lobos shot a first round 294, a second round 302 and a final round 288 to be the only team in the field to shoot two rounds below the 300 barrier. The 288 score is the second lowest in tournament history.
UNM was carried by fantastic individual performances by its five players. The Lobos had all five players finish in the top-12, including freshman Kailin Downs' second place finish.
Arizona's Lorena Ochoa won the tournament with a 218.
The Lobo domination started early in the two-day tournament, with 36 holes played on the first day. UNM lead by seven strokes after the first round and never looked back. Senior Cluadia Ferrini was in first place after the first day of action, leading by three strokes. However, she struggled in the final round and ended in fourth place with a 6-over 222. Downs finished just two strokes back after shooting a 4-over par 220. Freshman Shannon Johnson shot an 8-over 224 to finish in seventh place, while fellow sophomores Kristi Larsen and Katrina Leckovic finished in 12 place with an 11-over 227.
