Lobos ousted from MWC tourney

Second-seeded soccer team falls 2-1 to Air Force

The UNM women's soccer team's bid for a Mountain West Conference Tournament title ended abruptly in a 2-1 loss to the Air Force Academy in the conference quarterfinals Wednesday at Las Vegas, Nev.

The second-seeded Lobos were undone by their offense again as freshman forward/midfielder Coco D'Angelo scored a lone goal in the 88th minute of the game after the Falcons had forged a 2-0 lead.

Freshman forward/midfielder Jennifer Rowland led the way for the Falcons, scoring the game's opening goal and adding an assist in the 79th minute on an insurance goal just before UNM managed its score.

Lobos finish the season with a 4-12-2 record, including a 3-2-1 mark in the Mountain West that was good enough for sole possession of second place.

The Falcons move on to a semifinal match against either the University of Nevada at Las Vegas or the University of Wyoming Thursday at 7p.m.

Rowland, who was the conference's freshman of the year and a first-team all-conference selection, took a pass from sophomore midfielder Cookie Day and knocked it past UNM goalkeeper and fellow Mountain West first-team member Shelly Hammock with 51:17 gone in the game. Rowland then fed Marci Freund for another goal with 10:48 left in the game to wrap up the game for Air Force.

D'Angelo rebounded a shot from freshman Rachel Addison with 1:20 left in the game to cut the Falcons' lead to 2-1, but the Lobos could not find the back of the net the rest of the way.

"It was a very even game that could have gone either way," head coach Kit Vela said in a press release. "The seniors had a great game and really had a great season. Unfortunately we allowed them to score early in the second half and we've struggled coming from behind all year.

"We had plenty of opportunities to score, even in the final 30 seconds of the game and just weren't able to put them away."
