Editor,
Though I do not necessarily support the death penalty, I am confused by letters such as the one from Ms. Mellas-Ramirez, who says that many innocent people will be sentenced to die under capital punishment law.
Does this mean that she would support the death penalty if there were some fool-proof way to determine guilt?
I think we must separate the issue of human error from the issue of whether our justice system has the right to put someone to death, even if the person is guilty.
If all on death row admitted their guilt, would we feel any better about putting them to death?
I know I wouldn't. Meanwhile this would only start a trend of "not guilty" pleas to avoid the death penalty.
