We have spent a lot of time during the last two weeks talking about what's wrong with UNM. Such is the nature of our world, with people dwelling on the negative and barely taking the time to recognize anything else.
This weekend proved to be the perfect opportunity to escape with the UNM football and men's basketball teams providing an entertaining double-header against formidable opponents. Saturday was billed as one of University's biggest days in sports history. The games' importance for the school was overrated, but they were a great gift for fans.
The two events were as much about sports as the social atmosphere that allowed people from throughout the community to come together for one purpose - to have fun.
Sports fans may lament the fact that the Lobos lost both games but that didn't really matter. Both teams were competitive, making the games entertaining.
The only downside was not the final scores, but the poor sportsmanship displayed by fans at the conclusion of the men's basketball game. Upset by what they considered questionable calls by the referees, fans showered the floor with seat cushions.
Still, I have rarely seen so many students from such different walks of life sitting side by side, unified in support of their school. Say what you will about collegiate athletics, but days like Saturday provide the best argument for keeping them around.

As far apart as we are on so many issues, it's nice to know that simple things like football and basketball games can still bring us together.
