LETTER: U.S. must clean itself up before attacking others

Editor,

I will begin my letter by stating what other contributors to your publication have already stated. I am disgusted by the horrific acts of terrorism inflicted upon our great nation. Whoever is responsible for this horrendous crime against humanity must be punished and justice shall be served.

Now, I am not trying to be sarcastic or disrespectful. I truly do believe that what occurred Tuesday, Sept. 11, was something I never expected or wanted to witness in my lifetime. It was something I wish to never live through again.

A number of people with whom I share an indescribable bond were directly affected by this tragedy.

The point in which I am sarcastic, though, and somehow maybe even disrespectful in the eyes of some is when I state that whoever is responsible should be brought to justice.

According to our "intelligence" sources (obviously not so intelligent judging by last Tuesday's events) the evidence points to Saudi multimillionaire Osama bin Laden. It probably does. It was probably him. He is known to harbor an immense hatred for the Untied States, probably not unfounded, and he is known not only as a sponsor of terrorist attacks around the world, but also as the mastermind of many of them.

What enrages me and disgusts me, though, is that fact that the government of this "great nation" is stepping on the throats of the wake and demanding that Mr. bin Laden be turned over so that "justice may be served." What makes "America the beautiful" believe that it can act as God and judge between what is right and wrong?

I do not believe that bin Laden, a man who has stood up against any form of imperialism, first against the "evil empire" and now against the United States, should be punished for an act of war like the one he has committed. This "land of the free" has committed plenty of them and has never been punished - ever.

If this government has the tenacity to ask for Osama bin Laden "dead or alive" and the right to bring justice to its people by bringing him to trial, then the governments of Chile and Argentina, among many others, should have the right to bring justice and peace to the thousands of families whose relatives disappeared during the military Juntas of the 1970s.

They should have the right to do this by bringing our former secretary of state to trial - the honorable Henry Kissinger. His involvement in the dictatorships that reigned terror in Latin America was great, and in recent investigations by the above-mentioned governments, a lot of the evidence points to him.

If you think 5,000 lives lost is bad, try 35,000.

Any eye for an eye.

A tooth for a tooth.

Let's clean our backyards before we attempt to clean other's.
