Editor,
I believe that Professor Berthold showed extremely poor judgement and lack of sensitivity when he made the comment concerning the bombing of the pentagon. But, I do not believe he should be fired or sanctioned for this.
First, UNM is essentially a government entity. Any action by UNM against him could be a violation of the first amendment.
Secondly, and more importantly in this case, the free expression of ideas however unpopular is a must in our educational institutions. I would hate to see college professors engage in self-censorship because they fear of losing their jobs.
Finally, firing Professor Berthold could cause UNM to lose its credibility in the educational community and subject both UNM and New Mexico to ridicule in the national press.
I have heard various arguments for his dismissal, one being, "He doesn't reflect our values."

My response is that he doesn't have to. That is not his job.
Another argument proposed was, "We don't want him teaching that to our kids." My response is, first, one comment does not qualify as teaching and second, college students are or should be adults capable of forming their own opinions.
Give them some respect!
I write this opinion as a former student of Professor Berthold, whom I personally dislike because of his - in my opinion - unjustified arrogance and overtly racist attitudes, which go beyond simply stating historical facts, that he has expressed in the classroom.
If he is to be sanctioned, it should be for arguably violating the civil rights of students attending his classes by creating a hostile environment.
