LETTER: Berthold's apology should be enough

Editor,

I've stumbled on Professor Berthold's latest folderol. He hasn't changed since I graduated in 1984. He is quite correct that he can be callous and insensitive, but he also can be insightful and compassionate about issues.

I live in the Washington, D.C.-area, work at the FAA full time and serve as a Navy reservist. I have been quite busy since Sept. 11. I support Professor Berthold's right to say what he said. That's why I serve my country.

I used to say, along with fellow military officers, that bombing the Pentagon would be helpful. It was a joke before Sept. 11. It isn't a joke anymore when you go by the Pentagon daily and see the scar and reflect on those lucky to survive.

It is time to move on. Professor Berthold has apologized. We all have done some growing up, and we have some more to do. It is time to rebuild and reunite our country.

Douglas "Duke" Taylor

UNM alumnus
