LETTER: Berthold embarassing, deserves punishment

Editor,

The embarrassment continues.

Mr. Berthold is certainly entitled to his opinion, but it is inappropriate to use the canopy of tenure and academic freedom to provide immunity from being held accountable. He has used this shield successfully for the last 29 years and only apologized for his actions when it became apparent that someone might actually hold him responsible for his actions.

I have read a number of columns written by Mr. Berthold in the Daily Lobo, over the course of the last year. I assumed that Mr. Berthold was attempting to be the social conscience of the campus, but after this latest incident, I think Mr. Berthold has merely been marking time in this institution, using his position to spread his form of mischief.

Mr. Berthold is a coward and an embarrassment to this University. He would not last a day in a position outside of the academic environment; no one in a position of authority would tolerate his behavior. I do not think that the administration at the University of New Mexico has the absolute resolve to remove Mr. Berthold from the classroom; he will no doubt end up getting just a slap on the hand.

This makes it very difficult to defend the comments he made on Sept. 11, but to do anything less would be to deny the freedom that many have fought and died for over the course of our nation's history. I served with pride for 21 years defending that same freedom.

Mr. Berthold must live with his comments forever; I certainly hope that his conscience reminds him of it each day as he walks around this campus. It is important to me that he understands exactly what I think of him. I don't understand why it took Mr. Berthold 29 years to realize his true calling, something that has been obvious to many of us for a long time.

Mr. Berthold you are now, and will continue to be, no more than the south end of a northbound horse.
