LETTER: A modest propsal for Berthold

Editor,

Professor Berthold's actions and opinions are an outrage.

Not only should we have him fired, but his tongue also should be removed so that his dangerous opinions cannot infect any more ears in our population.

The University needs to be a place that nurtures the fragile opinions of young, right-wing, conservative students. With Berthold on staff, our ideas, religion and our freedom to learn are under attack.

How can we learn if we are being constantly bombarded with differing points of view? Letting Berthold's act slide would lead other individuals to speak similar "nonsense." Such a travesty would push us toward considering other ideas and viewpoints that differ from the correct ones - our own.

The steps that are being taken are good but they alone are not enough. We need to push farther and ask for the resignation of other faculty who support such a "beast of a man." Students who could possibly agree with such points of view need to be immediately withdrawn from the University. If they must be removed by force, then so be it.

This is a place of learning, such ideas need to be expressed elsewhere. Those who disagree and speak against a nation of such freedom, need to open their eyes and close their mouths and see how this statement was an attack on our very freedom and way of life.

A speech committee must be formed to control and regulate what is said to students to ensure that opinions expressed match only our own. Any professors who could possibly lead minds astray need to be monitored so they can be caught before they make some off-handed comment that could disrupt the logical flow of learning in upstanding citizens.

Individuals with differing opinions on the current political situation need to be dealt with quickly, no exceptions. Their assets, whatever they are, must be frozen and confiscated. Such individuals need to be rounded up and put into camps where someone can regulate them and their ideas. They need to be forcefully withdrawn from society so that our society may grow and come together. Berthold and his "followers" need to be removed from their places so that they can do no more harm to the wonderful nation in which we freely live.
