LETTER: The price of opposition

Editor,

Had Osama bin Laden read his U.S. history more carefully, perhaps he might not have launched such an attack. He might have realized that the United States does not stop until it has taken its enemies off at the knees.

The devastation perpetuated by contact between European nations and the United States and the indigenous peoples of the Americas is far greater than Susan Andress Bontrager reports in her letter published Wednesday.

The population of what is now the "lower 48" was between 18-22 million people. Florida alone had close to a million people. After all, the phrase "the only good Indian is a dead Indian" did originate here.

Fortunately, once the United States has permanently crippled an enemy, it is generous to a fault.
