Event more than football

Soccer, cross-country, volleyball on tap for homecoming

The city of Albuquerque will be a hotbed of action this weekend with numerous UNM sporting events during the homecoming week.

There are four Lobo athletic teams that will be hosting games during the weekend.

The football team takes on the Air Force Academy at University Stadium Saturday at 4 p.m. to highlight the homecoming festivities.

Three teams will be expecting a big crowd for season ending farewells as they end the portion of the home schedule this weekend.

Along with the football game, the women's soccer team will play two games against Mountain West Conference opponents. The Lobos' (3-9-2, 2-1-1) last two home games of the season at the UNM Soccer Complex sees them playing the University of Nevada at Las Vegas Friday and San Diego State University Sunday.

The Lobos are in a battle for first place because they are a half game behind the top spot.

The volleyball team also plays its last home games of the season at Johnson Arena this weekend when they play the University of Utah Friday and then battle Brigham Young University Saturday.

The Lobos (3-15, 1-8) will need a big crowd to help them as they were swept in three straight games by both teams in earlier meetings this season. Both teams are among the top teams in the nation as BYU is ranked 13th and Utah is ranked 18th in the country.

Probably the most important event this weekend will be the cross-country tournament Saturday.

A conference title will be on the line when UNM hosts the Mountain West Conference Championships at the Paradise Hills Golf Course.

The UNM men's and women's cross-country teams have had a successful season so far and hope to carry the momentum into an impressive performance in the conference tournament.

However, the competition will be tough because there are three teams ranked in the top-25 on the men's side, while there are two teams ranked on the women's side, including BYU who is second in the nation.
