When searching for reasons why today's mayoral election is important, one need look no farther than a nearby television screen.
On any given station during the last few weeks, you would be hard-pressed to watch for very long without seeing an inspiring leader who looked very presidential in our time of need - New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Talk show host David Letterman fought back tears when he said Giuliani personified courage in the days following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
What better evidence of the important role a mayor of any city in this country plays?
Admittedly, we have all been distracted from life in our backyards as we are transfixed by the response to the attacks.
But, we have been told to go on with our lives. What better way to do that than by exercising our rights to vote?

The mayor's race is brimming with seven unique candidates, each of whom have a unique vision for this city's future.
The City Council also has several vacancies with numerous viable candidates jockeying for the right to serve their neighbors.
Then you have 11 bond issues and three key city charter amendments that should not be overlooked.
I don't presume to have all the answers for this city and chose not to endorse any candidates or support any issues on the ballot.
Instead, I simply implore readers to head to the polls today.
If you don't vote, you lose the right to complain and ignore one of our civil liberties that is taken for granted far too often.
