LETTER: Berthold isn't evil, he just made an honest mistake

Editor,

It is interesting and refreshing to see the Daily Lobo making an honest effort in presenting both sides of the Inquisition of Professor Berthold and of the up and coming war on terrorism.

The Daily Lobo, in my humble opinion, gave us an excellent well-written and informative column by Sim¢n Trujillo, which was equally balanced by the inept and clueless column by Craig A. Butler.

This balance clearly demonstrates the right of every American to state their cause or opinion.

On one hand, we have an article by Sim¢n Trujillo, that is thought provoking and works to make one think from different perspectives.

On the other hand, we have Mr. Butler, who clearly demonstrates the arrogance that people outside of the United States have come to expect and cherish.

As a former U.S. marine I would never think that an Afghan soldier might be as inept in guerilla warfare as Mr. Butler is in his understanding of what war in that mountainous country is like. The terrorist network in not limited to just that one country or has that point been missed?

I also realize the ability, patriotism and commitment of all of our Armed Services while acknowledging the suffering they will face and overcome.

My main comment is on the letter written by a UNM alumnus. I suggest we use history itself against Professor Berthold.

How about a public flogging by the Duck Pond. Or place Professor Berthold in a Salem witch-hunt type stock and set times for proponents of Professor Berthold to provide bread, water and perhaps shade, while setting aside time for his opponents to flog or torture the professor into recanting his apology and admitting his desire to overthrow our government.

Perhaps we can have Professor Berthold implicate his family or other faculty or UNM staff who share in his evil plots.

Or maybe, it was just an honest mistake on Professor Berthold's and Mr. Butler's part.

And now I have heard, what is usually the next step in these types of scenarios, rumors that some student is suing Professor Berthold and is starting a fund to help pay for the lawyer's fees.

I have an alternate suggestion to this student. Call Oprah or face off on Jerry Springer. I am sure you will get 10 times as much attention.
