LETTER: Berthold inspires his students, should stay

Editor,

The remark that Professor Berthold made about the attack on the Pentagon was out of line and insensitive, but that doesn't change the fact that he is still one of the best professors this University has to offer.

In the past, he has said things that were controversial and has been criticized by students and faculty members, and it is correct to say he is an outspoken personality.

While his remark was in bad taste, it is not grounds for termination from his position. The state representative who wishes to fire Berthold is simply over reacting to the remarks because his son works in the Pentagon. He is letting passion override his sense of fairness.

Seeing tears in his eyes as I watched him apologize on the news last night, I truly believe that Berthold is sorry for what he said.

On a personal note, Professor Berthold is the reason I am considering majoring in history. His way of making the glory and folly of the past come alive is amazing, and he has inspired me like no other teacher I've ever had.

His removal would be a great loss to UNM. Please, let's exercise good judgement at this moment in history when it is needed more than ever.
