Editor,
My letter is in regard to the article in Monday's Daily Lobo concerning Richard Berthold's remark about the Pentagon.
Personally, I do not agree with the remarks Berthold made, for which he has apologized. They were inappropriate and insensitive. Personally, I feel a sense of disgust for the people who perpetrated these acts and my heart is moved for all those who lost their lives and all the people in the world who are now affected by the aftermath.
On the other hand, I support Berthold's long tradition of playing the role of the "devil's advocate." In today's America, we often are informed and taught from a very heterosexual, white, Christian, American male perspective by our universities and media.
Quite often I do not agree with Berthold's commentaries, but I do enjoy and appreciate the discussions and questions they spark. No matter how right and confident we feel in our beliefs, we should always attempt to view them from different perspectives. Berthold has always been there to help us with the different perspective.
Although I certainly do not agree with the remarks Berthold made on Sept 11, I do salute him for his unwavering dedication to making people discuss and question beliefs, people and situations. After all, discussing, questioning and learning are what we are all here for.
