Editor,
The following statement was written by graduate students and faculty in the School of Architecture and Planning in response to a recent incident where two international students from this school were harassed after the tragic events of Sept. 11.
We stand in solidarity with all victims of the acts of violence that took place on Sept. 11. We want to express our support for all students, faculty and staff who may be targeted as scapegoats for this horrendous event.
We will not tolerate any acts of racism against any individual or group of people in this school. We encourage all students to speak out against any and all personal attacks that may arise because an individual's religious beliefs or ethnic background may be associated with those alleged to have perpetrated these acts of violence.
Anger and resentment misdirected to innocent people will only be counterproductive to the real need for healing and moving forward with our lives. The Community and Regional Planning Program's Statement on Sexism and Racism reaffirms our belief that it is of vital importance to create a climate in which all of us can un-learn those prejudices with which we were raised.
In both academic study and personal interaction, we aim to replace bias with a healthy and active respect for the common traits and wonderful differences, which, taken together, make us humans.
