UNM professor named editor of journal

Jeanne Logsdon, an organizational studies professor at UNM's Anderson Schools of Management, is taking care of business.

Logsdon was recently named editor of the academic journal Business & Society. She has worked as the journal's associate editor since 1997.

The journal consists of original research studies from institutions of higher learning throughout the country and related book reviews.

Logsdon, received a doctorate from University of California-Berkeley and came to UNM in 1989. She said her promotion is a complement to UNM and the Anderson Schools of Management but that she couldn't have done it alone.

"My professional background is one piece of it but there is the school and the department's support with resources," she said.

Logsdon said that Howard Smith, dean of the Anderson Schools of Management, helped her to clear space in the building for a new office and gave financial support to hire an assistant.

She said she had to teach one less class to free up time for the 25 to 30 hours a month that she devotes to the journal.

"Our collective future depends on corporate social responsibility and ethical decision making," Logsdon said in a recent press release. "My hope is that the high-quality research published by this journal will benefit companies and their managers, employers, neighbors, communities and everyone affected by company actions."

Business & Society is sponsored by the International Association for Business and Society, which is a professional scholarly organization. Contributors to the journal have included Virginia W. Gerde and Craig G. White's collaborative study in the March 2001 issue called "The Taxation of Married Couples." Both researchers are assistant professors at the Anderson Schools.

"The idea is original research," Logsdon said. "We're finding new knowledge."

One of the reoccurring issues in the journal is business ethics and its context in the world economy.

"Every time you deal with people there is a moral responsibility," Logsdon said.
