Student defends her right to espouse an unhappy opinion

Editor,

I am appalled by what I read in the Aug. 29 issue of the Daily Lobo by T-VI student Matthew Hooge.

Mr. Hooge is a T-VI student that knows nothing about UNM policies, standards or propaganda. I just want to clarify my letter about M-lot parking in the Aug. 27 issue for Daily Lobo readers.

My letter concerning the M-lot parking situation was not meant as a "poor me" article. I wrote my letter to the editor to unite all those that have ever felt "enough is enough," for all those who just want competence and good customer service for once!

I also would like to provide a brief profile of myself so that readers can understand a little bit about me. I do not throw my money away on unnecessary items such as extra-value meals or shopping.

I am a student - a simple college student.

I don't buy extra things because I spend my money on my two children and their school tuition, uniforms and shoes; extracurricular activity fees; and of course groceries to feed my family of four.

Darn me for working two jobs and not being able to attend school for several years so that I could save money to buy a house to place a roof over my two kids' heads!

Darn me for buying a sensible car that won't break down in the middle of the freeway -so that I will not put my safety or my children's safety in jeopardy!

I didn't vent those issues to the public, because these are not issues that affect the public, just as the fact that Mr. Hooge drives a 1987 Toyota doesn't, or the fact that he lives in an apartment and not a house!

It is a sad time when one is not able to merely vent an opinion because one does not have a "happy, let's all hold hands" opinion. Every once in awhile, people have to say, "Stop - I deserve more than what I'm getting."

Don't let opinionated people stand in your way because you don't stop along the way to smell the roses. Sometimes, you have to squash the roses instead - if for nothing more than to feel better.

Dawn M. Lehner,

Undergraduate student
