Network problems fixed, NT servers were hacked

Editor,

Thank you for your coverage on the recent UNM Network problems.

The intermittent connection and slowdown problems were corrected May 31. The situation was caused by a combination of network upgrade problems, incompatibility issues between some UNM department-specific equipment and UNM Network devices and another series of denial-of-service attacks, which were coincidental and compounded the other two problems.

The Web server hacking problems experienced at the end of the spring semester were not on the UNM Web server, which is a UNIX server and is maintained by CIRT. The affected Web servers were department-specific NT servers — for example, the I-TEL-UNM server, which is owned and maintained by the UNM Registrar’s Office.

CIRT would like to encourage all UNM departments that purchase, install or maintain internal networks or Web servers to be aware of equipment and security issues. CIRT network engineers, technicians and consultants are available to collaborate or consult with departments on network and security issues. Call the CIRT Support Center at 277 4848, for more information.

If members of the UNM community would like notification of system availability, regular downtimes or problem resolution, and they can sign up for the sysinfo-l mailing list. Go to www.unm.edu/cirt/sysinfo-l for the list archive and links to the Web-based subscription page.
