UNM police release sketch of suspect

Man accused of attacking women in parking garage

The UNM Police Department released a composite sketch of a man who has been accused of attacking three women during the past three months in the parking structure at the northeast intersection of Campus and Lomas Boulevards.

According to a UNM press release, the suspect is described as a 20-year-old black man about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs about 145 pounds. He has short brown hair and was last seen wearing a black security guard vest and black pants.

UNMPD encourages anyone who may have seen the suspect to call UNM Crime Stoppers at 277-STOP or campus police at 277-2241 or 277-3065.

The suspect has been accused of attacking women on three separate occasions. The latest police report, filed April 16, stated that at about 5:50 p.m. on March 27, a woman was going upstairs in the southeast stairwell of the parking structure when she encountered a man going downstairs talking on his cellular phone. As he passed her, the man grabbed her left breast. She slapped his hand away, according to the report, and he grabbed her wrist. He then told her, “I’ll touch you if I want,” let go of her wrist and grabbed her breast again.

The woman stated in the report that she said “No!” loudly and slapped his wrist away. The suspect grabbed her wrist again and said, “I’ll touch you if I want.” The woman got away from him, the report states, and walked quickly up the stairs to her car. She said she did not see the man again.

Lt. James Daniels, UNMPD spokesman, said no other incidents of harassment in the structure have been reported since then. He also said the police department, UNM Hospital security guards and UNM Student Patrol will continue to make rounds in the area. Daniels encourages people not walk alone in the parking structure and to call for an escort late at night.
