Travis Clark, a junior majoring in biology, said he decided to run for office to become more involved in ASUNM.
Clark said the role of a senator is to represent students.
“Our job is to actually express the views of students and make sure we do everything we can to meet their needs,” Clark said.
Clark said he feels qualified to serve as a senator because he thinks he can represent students well.
“I feel like I can stand for people equally through diversity and representation,” he said.
He said that, if elected, he would like to change major campus problems, such as soaring tuition costs and lack of campus safety.
“The other big issue is racism, diversity and pretty much making people accountable
to what they do at the University,” he said.
Clark said he would change those problems by incorporating communication from the student body to the Board of Regents and president.
He said the biggest challenge that ASUNM will face this year is the lack of communication between the students and ASUNM, not to mention faculty and staff.
When asked to name three members of the Board of Regents, the president of the University and three student groups, Cajete named Jack Fortner, Eric Anaya and Larry Willard as regents; Dr. William Gordon as president; and Black Student Union, M.E.Ch.A. and Hispanic Engineering Society.
