Reynalds’ regular column is a disservice to readers

Editor,

I don’t know if I’m the only person who feels offended by the Daily Lobo’s editor’s flippant and rather callous response to serious inquiries regarding the reason why Jeremy Reynalds’ is entitled to rant in a weekly column.

The editor, instead of explaining his position and being honest with the readers, gives a cop out, standardized response by arguing that it is the newspaper’s responsibility to protect Reynalds’ free speech rights and that not doing so equates to censorship. With this standard, former graduates who are racists, bigots, misogynists or any other hate-filled intolerant people should also have weekly columns. I’m sure they would appreciate their right to free speech too.

Maybe the editor doesn’t have a problem with religious intolerance. I agree with the editor that Jeremy should have an outlet for his thoughts. His opinions should make the editorial page from time to time if he chooses to send them to the Daily Lobo.

However, I think it is a disservice to the community to give Jeremy the privilege of a weekly column when other more deserving people aren’t, which in my mind is censorship.

Editor’s Note: As the new editor in chief, I agree with the former editor’s protection of Jeremy Reynalds’ rights to freedom of speech. During my term, students, faculty and staff will be given first priority when it comes to editorial space. Reynalds will retain a column as long as no one else on campus is willing to consistently contribute to the student newspaper.
