Jacqueline Farrington

UNM sophomore Jaqueline Farrington is running for office because she felt no connection to student government, wanted to know what is going on and hopes to make an impact on her community.

The biochemistry major said she is involved in a few other organizations such as the Pre-Medical Club and the Residence Hall Association.

"Several of my friends have been on the Senate, and I wanted to get involved on a larger scale," she said.

Farrington said the role of senator includes representing organizations, distributing student fees, serving on committees that are part of the student government system of checks and balances and playing a role in social events.

She said her determination to do a good job best qualifies her to serve as a senator.

"I am extremely involved, I also did student government in high school and the Residence Hall Association is government on much smaller scale," she said.

Farrington said she, along with her peers on The Connection slate, hope to better communicate with their peers.

"That's what my slate is all about because so many groups I know, like the Pre-Med Association lost out on their budget because didn't know what was going on," she said. "I want to push for a more personal involvement with student groups and start listservs, build a better Web page and develop the technology we have to make a connection with students."

She said the biggest challenge facing ASUNM depends on what is going on next year.

"Getting people together and getting to know a whole new group of people that you have to work with is going to be tough," Farrington said. "I just hope that communication between senators is strong."

When asked to name the UNM president, three members of the Board of Regents and three student groups, Farrington identified William Gordon as president; Eric Anaya, Richard Toliver and Larry Willard as regents; and the Residence Hall Association, College Republicans and the Pre-Medical Association as student groups.
