Editor,
In recent weeks a great deal of construction work has occurred on campus. The noise, especially in close proximity to a classroom building, is not only distracting but causes problems for those who are trying to concentrate on a lecture.
I have a class in Mitchell Hall in a classroom very near a construction area. The noise generated makes it impossible to hold a coherent discussion about the topic at hand.
Due to my problems with writing, I have to tape record my classes. The noise makes it especially difficult to do this. I feel that, because of the noise, I can't get what I want to out of the class. It is a disruption, not only to me but other students as well.
Not only is the noise a distraction, but it could be dangerous to students' hearing. While I don't object to improving the University, something has to be done about this noise. Perhaps limiting work in some areas, especially at Mitchell and Dane Smith Halls or other classroom building areas until after 2 p.m., when fewer classes meet. If nothing is done about this problem, then the learning environment in these areas will be severely compromised.
