What has driven our success the past three games is that we're getting hot at the right time.
We have been playing with a vengeance, and that's what we'll need if we plan to make a run at a Mountain West Conference title and the NCAA Tournament.
In our win over San Diego State University Saturday, the first half was close, but in the second half we played similarly to the way we did against Georgia State University. Our defense helped our offense, as steals led to dunks and 3-pointers, which opened the game up.
San Diego State is a team we will have to watch for over the next couple of years. They could be a very dangerous team in the Mountain West.
Monday night's game against the University of Nevada at Las Vegas was very intense. We were tired of getting beat by them, since UNLV had beaten us three straight times. The game was loud and showed me why The Pit is still the loudest arena in the country. At times, we would make a play and the crowd would explode.
Don't get me wrong. The Pit crowds are always loud, but this game had more emotion. I got the feeling the student body and fans wanted us to win this game as bad as we did, and those are the kind of games you like to be involved in. It was a great win for us.
Our next challenges are coming up on the road against Colorado State University Saturday, then the University of Wyoming Monday night on ESPN. One of our closest victories of the year came against the Rams - a 72-71 overtime win in The Pit. Colorado State is one of the most dangerous shooting teams in the nation, and it doesn't help us that we have to play them in Ft. Collins. Anyway, we will have to match the intensity we've had in our previous three games, and we have to play as if we are at home.
Monday we have another tough one, but we will take each game one step at a time. If we win Saturday, we'll try to look at it as if we are on a one-game winning streak instead of looking ahead to Wyoming.
Wish us luck.
