Editor,
Recently, I was eating dinner at La Posada Dining Hall and decided to take a bagel back to my dorm room as a snack for later that night.
I was quite distressed to find out that not only was I stopped at the door and told to give up my bagel, it also was to be thrown away. It was one of the few bagels that I found fresh, and I even asked the person who stopped me, "Are you going to throw this away if I give it to you?" He said that he would.
At that moment, I felt compelled to take the time to sit there and eat the bagel so he wouldn't throw it away. Alas, I was too full, and he threw the bagel away. Now I know it wasn't his fault that he had to take the bagel away, because it's "house rules" that no food can be taken outside of the dining hall; but come on, a measly bagel?
What difference does it make if I eat the bagel on the spot or later in the night? The only difference is that "LaPo" security is going to take my bagel and toss it in the trash. I do remember swiping my card for an "All You Can Eat" meal, so I did pay for the bagel, right?
What bothered me most was that he threw the bagel away. If you aren't going to let me eat it at my leisure, don't toss it for no good reason. Tell me to donate the bagel; I'll give it to the plenty of hungry people I see when I walk to Frontier Restaurant.
I cannot begin to imagine the number of hungry people in this world that would love a single bite of that bagel. Fellow students, including myself, scrounge around our rooms looking for dimes and nickels to use on the snack machine. The management at La Posada has to come up with a better policy regarding "snacks" being taken out of the dining hall.
I feel bad for the guy who has to stop all these students and take their food to the trash. That is a poor management policy, and you, management, should be the people at the door with a little badge that says, "Food Security - To detect and toss."
