If you haven't had the chance to take a look at Conceptions Southwest, UNM's visual-literary arts publication, you should.
The magazine is put together by students for the UNM community. The publication is in the form of a small book - just about as long as a hand - and is filled with poetry, fiction, visual art and interviews.
Elizabeth Butler, the magazine's editor, said her goal was to create more than a magazine.
"We really wanted to create more than a mode of content, we wanted to make it an object," she said. "We wanted to make people want to pick it up."
The most recent issue showcases some talented writers and interesting interviews with different people around the Albuquerque area.
One particularly interesting and insightful interview was with Brett Bakker, who produces local magazine "Wig Wam Bam," which focuses on the local music scene. Bakker is a strong supporter of local bands and businesses.
Students have the opportunity to become involved with the publication by submitting a piece of work for publication or by applying for a staff position.
Students can pick up submission forms in Marron Hall, room 121. The due date for submissions for the next issue is Feb. 28.
Interviews for the editor position will take place in the spring, are held on an open-call basis and conducted by the Student Publication Board.
Butler said people who want to work with Conceptions need to have ideas of what they are interested in doing when they come in for the interview for any position. The main goal is simply to provide students with a chance to get some experience.
"People don't have to have experience to work here," Butler said. "It is here to give you experience. Decide what area you want to be involved in: fiction, poetry, production . It doesn't matter. You could also be involved in more than one area."
Butler started out with the fiction section her freshman year, and she says she has a love for that genre.
