People Living Through Cancer, the Intercultural Cancer Council and UNM's African American Studies Department are working together to present "Speaking with One Voice," a forum addressing the unequal burden of cancer on minorities and the poor.

The groups have invited three doctors and two health care providers to talk about the cancer prevention options available and answer audience questions.

The forum will be held today from 7-9 p.m. at the UNM Cancer Center, 900 Camino de Salud Rd., in conference room 240. For more information, call 892-1982 or 242-3163.

The UNM School of Engineering will be sponsoring "Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day" Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The workshop is part of a National Engineers Week 2001 campaign to reach out to girls and offer hands-on experiences in engineering and science. National Engineers Week is from Feb. 18-24.

Workshop participants include 35 fifth-through-eighth grade girls from Albuquerque, Socorro, Los Lunas, Rio Rancho and Bernalillo. The workshop will include physics laboratory demonstrations and team challenges.

Participants will build a bubble-powered rocket project and learn about engineering from students in the five UNM engineering and computer science disciplines.

Norine Meyer, senior program adviser for the Diversity in Engineering Program, said in a press release that the unique part about the event is that UNM engineering students will be the facilitators and will teach engineering to the participants.

"Research indicates that girls and young women lose interest in subjects and the fields of study leading to engineering careers long before they enter college," Meyer said. "Girls need to see and hear women student engineers to begin viewing themselves in these roles."

The event organizers are UNM senior Adriana Zuniga, junior Katie Welch, sophomore Jen Peer, sophomore Leslie Simmons and freshman Janus Herrera.
