They are crispy, flaky and definitely decadent.
Pecorino cheese and lemon pepper breadsticks have arrived to Albuquerque from the Aficionado European Bakery in Santa Barbara, Calif. When Miguel Bermudez and John Chamberlain, who were working in Zurich, Switzerland, met, they decided to open a bakery that would serve European specialties. Today their bakery supplies fine restaurants, gourmet food stores, hotels and now COSTCO stores in the Western United States.
These are not your typical breadsticks. They have a taste from the southern regions of Europe and a unique and rich flavor. The crispy croissant dough creates a flakiness that crumbles in your mouth, and often ends up on the floor.
The oily flavor of the breadsticks is a result of what an Aficionado European Bakery press release calls "copious amounts of premium butter and imported Pecorino Romano cheese."
Pecorino Romano cheese is an imported Italian cheese made from sheep's milk.
The breadsticks provide great accompaniment for soups, especially tomato soup, salads and white wine. They work as a snack, but require a refreshing liquid to wash the richness down.
